About the book

The story

Huffin is a brave little puffin on the cliffs of Iceland, the Land of Fire and Ice, and she is proud of her island. She leads readers past tumbling waterfalls and black sand beaches, over green cliff tops where sheep graze, and down to the steaming springs where the fire meets the snows. Every stop brings a new Icelandic friend, each introduced on its own colorful spread.

Why it works at bedtime

The story moves along at a read-aloud pace, with a pattern a child quickly learns and joins. Across 36 pages the tour builds from windy cliffs to the glow of the northern lights, so the story naturally quiets as Huffin settles in. Most families finish it in about five minutes, which makes it an easy nightly habit.

What children take from it

Iceland's waterfalls, hot springs, northern lights and wildlife are all real, so children pick up a first sense of a place most picture books never visit. Ages 3 to 5 ride along on the pictures and the read-aloud pace, and beginning readers ages 6 to 8 find the short text friendly to read alone. It is the rare bedtime book that teaches geography without anyone noticing.
